About Fran
Kelso
Fran Kelso, teacher
and plant guide, has long believed that everything we need for
survival can be found in the area in which we live. It
is simply up to us to learn what is available to us, where it
can be found, and how to use it. Knowledge and training
is available for the hunter and the fisherman, but for the forager
of wild plants to be used for food or for medicine, hands-on
training is not so easy to find. Backwoods Botany has
been established to make a start towards filling this educational
gap.
Fran’s training
has been in the true “backwoods botany” tradition. From
her home in the woods on beautiful Spruce Island, close to the
native village of Ouzinkie, she began her plant lore investigations.
She started learning about plants from native elders and later
sought more knowledge from books written by experts in the field.
Having been an
Alaskan for 33 years, Fran has had ample opportunity to study
her subject matter. Fran came to Kodiak as a musician
in 1969 and decided to stay. Beginning in 1977, she and
a collection of friends built her home on Spruce Island, where
she lived from 1979 to 2000. From 1979 to 1984,
she taught adults in the village of Ouzinkie, winning the Alaska
Adult Educator of 1982 award. In 1985, her book, “Plant
Lore of an Alaskan Island” was published by Alaska Northwest
Books. It describes edible and medicinal uses of wild
plants of the area and is a compilation of information gathered
by Fran and a study group of Ouzinkie residents.
